$1.6 million for Quinte Health Infrastructure

The Province of Ontario is injecting more than $1.6 million for several pieces of hospital infrastructure in Belleville and Trenton.

On Thursday afternoon at Trenton Memorial Hospital, a hospital that was constructed in 1951, MPP Todd Smith announced the funding, along with Quinte Health President and CEO Stacey Daub.

Hastings-Lennox and Addington MPP Ric Bresee, Quinte West Mayor Jim Harrison, members with the hospital foundation, and members of Quinte Health were also on hand for the announcement.

The money will be used on several projects, including the replacement of a 25-year-old boiler at TMH.  Other work includes hot water work in Trenton, the passenger elevator at TMH, the air distribution system, and medical air and gas upgrades.

There is also work on water infrastructure and line circulation at Belleville General Hospital.

CEO Stacey Daub says the new work at TMH is for more than just the current hospital footprint.

” The boiler here, we couldn’t put a new Emergency Department into the Trenton Memorial Hospital without upgrading the boiler system.”

She adds they are attempting to plan for the future, while meeting the needs of the present.

“Our communities are growing a lot and what we are trying to do with municipalities and with the provincial government, is have a more proactive view at the growth of our populations, what’s going to be required in terms of growth of hospitals in the local regions.”

The money is part of a $228 million funding for critical infrastructure inside Ontario hospitals, through the Health Infrastructure Renewal Fund.  It will be spread across 129 hospitals and 59 community health centres.  Of the $1.6 million announced, just over 20 per cent comes from the Exceptional Circumstances Project grant.
