1 killed in shooting at Fashion Island retail center in Newport Beach

NEWPORT BEACH – A person was killed Tuesday during an apparent robbery and shooting at Fashion Island in Newport Beach.

Initial reports from police indicated a mid-afternoon robbery at the shopping mall led to one of the suspects opening fire, an official said.

There was no immediate description of a suspect or whether more than one person was shot.

News video from the scene showed a police had placed a tent over a victim on a street at the center.

The shooting startled staff and shoppers at Fashion Island, at 401 Newport Center Drive, described by its owner, the Irvine Company, as “an unrivaled setting for ultra-premium shopping, dining and lifestyle brands.”
