2024 Olympic Games: Who is in USA’s Men’s Basketball group? Tournament format and schedule
The 2024 Olympic Games are less than three weeks away, with the action in Paris to get underway on 26 July and run through to 11 August. As ever, basketball will be one of the event’s main draws, with 12 nations competing to take home the iconic gold medal.
Which countries will compete in the 2024 Olympics men’s basketball tournament?
Along with host nation France, 11 countries have qualified for the men′s tournament, with South Sudan, Canada, the United States, Japan, Germany, Serbia and Australia booking their spots by virtue of their performances at the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup.
A further four countries – Spain, Brazil, Greece and Puerto Rico – navigated their way through four separate Olympic Qualifying Tournaments, which were held between July 2 and 7.
Luka Doncic’s Slovenia were one of the teams to miss out.
How does the Group Phase work? Which teams qualify for the Final Phase?
The two teams are divided into three groups (A, B and C) of four teams each. Each country will play the others in their group once (a total of three games), with the top two teams from each group and the two best third-placed teams across the three groups progressing to the Final Phase.
The tournament will then switch to a knockout format, starting with the quarter-finals. A draw will determine the pairings for the last eight, with the best ranked team from the Group Phase facing the worst, the second best facing the second worst, and so on.
Teams who were in the same group cannot play against each other in the quarter-finals.
Who will USA play in the Group Phrase at the 2024 Olympic Games?
The United States, ranked number one in the world, will play against Serbia (ranked four), Puerto Rico (ranked 16) and South Sudan (ranked 33) in Group C.
Full draw for the the 2024 Olympics men’s basketball tournament
The 2024 tournament will begin on Saturday 27 July and end with the final on Saturday 10 August, the penultimate day of the Games. There will be matches every day, with the exception of Monday 5 August.
The United States have won seven of the last eight men’s basketball tournaments at the Olympic Games, with Argentina triumphing in the other in Athens in 2004. The US narrowly defeated France in the final of the last edition, winning 87-82 in the showpiece game.
