$30 for guacamole: food prices in the Hamptons demand deep pockets
The streets of the Hamptons are lined with designer boutiques and thronged by film stars and musicians who migrate to the seaside resort every summer.
But all have been upstaged this year by a lobster salad and a pot of guacamole. The lobster salad appeared at a family-run grocery store in East Hampton, priced at $120 a pound. The guacamole was on sale at a fishmongers for $30 a tub.
Even in a stretch of Long Island, New York, where there are only six houses worth less than a million dollars, these prices raised eyebrows. But they were merely the tip of the iceberg lettuce.
