3rd Annual Callahan Crusaders Golf Tournament tees off at Rivers Edge Golf Course

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (KNOP) – Many people came out ready to tee off at the Third Annual Callahan Crusaders Golf Tournament and to help raise funds for Gift of Hope on Friday.

Gift of Hope is a non-profit organization that helps members of the community who are struggling financially due to their cancer diagnosis and this is the third year the Callahan Cancer Center has put on this tournament.

Last year they helped 71 people and raised over $42,000 for Gift of Hope.

This year there were 15 teams and a total of 60 golfers.

One of the Gift of Hope Board of Directors Julie Hlavaty said what it means to receive these funds again this year.

“It means the world, I think we have a very good organization and were very dedicated to a good cause and when you get this kind of community support from the hospital it means so much to us and were very grateful,” said Hlavaty.

Lastly, the three registered nurses Staci Thompson, Carmen Schmidt and Jenn Kleewein who organized the tournament said why this it’s so important to them and their reasons for hosting this annual tournament.

“So I personally like doing the golf tournament because all of this money will stay local and help the patients, we see on a daily basis,” said Thompson.

“I do this to help our patients and for personal reasons as well,” said Schmidt. “I’ve lost three grandparents, a brother and sister-in law and my husband is in remission.”

“I lost my mom to lung cancer and I love being able to help our patients and give them a good experience because most of them are like family,” said Kleewein.
