Armed gardai respond to ‘disturbance’ at Limerick wedding

GARDAI were called to two separate weddings in Limerick in two days.

On Friday night, June 21, a garda spokesperson said officers responded to reports of a “disturbance” at a premises in Limerick. The nature of the “disturbance” is not known.

Videos of armed gardai, believed to be from the Armed Support Unit, outside the venue were widely shared on social media

“All persons left the premises when requested,” said the garda spokesperson.

On the following night, Saturday June 22, the father of the bride was arrested over an alleged ear biting incident at his daughter’s wedding.

A second man – a brother of the newlywed – was also arrested in connection with the altercation, which occurred at a different venue in Limerick.

The victim, thought to be a guest at the wedding celebration, sustained a serious ear injury with one line of enquiry being that it was bitten at the afters of the wedding.

A garda spokesperson confirmed a man in his 20s suffered “serious injuries” and was taken to University Hospital Limerick for treatment. The  details of the ear injury are not known.

“Gardai are investigating an assault that occurred at a premises at approximately 9pm,” said the garda spokesperson.  

“Two men, one aged in his 20s and the other in his 50s, were arrested at the scene and taken to a local garda station,” added the garda spokesperson.

The father and son from west Limerick have since been released, pending a file to the Director of Public Prosecutions.
