Ryanair currently has flights from Dublin to Alghero for just €34.99 in August.

The low cost airline said: “Alghero has a character like no other. A popular resort destination for Italians, Alghero offers some of the most relaxing and quaint spas in Sardinia.”

Built in the 16th century, the beautiful city is enclosed by ancient walls and has lots to explore.

Soak up the rays on one of the many beaches – including Spiaggia di Maria Pia, Spiaggia Mugoni and Spiaggia Delle Bombarde.

Take in the breathtaking waters on a snorkelling trip or spot some adorable dolphins in the turquoise Mediterranean Sea.

It’s the ideal destination for sailing with catamaran trips and sunset cruises.

Explorers will love the hidden caves of Frecce delle Grotte or hiking the Capo Caccia Vertical Cliffs.

Foodies will have lots to try – as well as Italian favourites – including Spanish and Moroccan dishes.

Ryanair chiefs said: “Although an Italian city, Alghero has a slight Spanish and Moroccan feel that is reflected in their cuisine.

“Their traditional foods are locally grown and crafted from fine recipes that have been passed down for years.

How to check in for a Ryanair flight

“Influenced by Catalan cuisine, the local food of Alghero is highly seafood based and prepared with locally caught fish.

“Seafood pasta is a must-try in this city. Check out some of the restaurants in the Via Cavour and the Alghero Piazza Duomo.”

And don’t forget a trip to the vineyard Azienda Agricola Leda’ d’Ittirin

Visitors took to Tripadvisor to rate their experience in Alghero.

One person said: “Great beaches with white sand and crystal clear water.

“Alghero is a good main destination to reach almost all good beaches.”

Another said: “Mini Split in Croatia! Vibrant modern areas for locals and old town with narrow streets for tourists, which shuts from 1 until 4.30pm.

“Restaurants don’t serve until 7.30pm at the earliest, lots to choose from.

“But do stroll up every little side street, because most restaurants/bars have little or no outside name lights etc.

“You’ll stumble on a gem on what seemed like a dark alley from the bottom.

“Very pleasant harbour and port area, cafes across the road from the port are top class during the day – great foccacia.”

While another added: “When you think of a place to visit and you wish it to be charming, with breath-taking panoramas, close to amazing white sand beaches and crystal clear waters, with an interesting history and mixture of cultures, with loads of shops, lively streets, where to enjoy fantastic meals …. well Alghero is certainly what is in your mind.”
