Don Goodman: Leeds United promotion hopes boosted this week

The Wales international’s arrival coincided with Archie Gray heading the opposite way, but Leeds now have funds to strengthen at right-back.

And in the view of Goodman, a strong defence – which will undoubtedly be the case with Rodon around – is key to any hopes of promotion.

“Central defence was certainly an area that needed plugging for Leeds,” Goodman told MOT Leeds News. “Ipswich Town last season are a rare exception, but usually if you want promotion to the Premier League you have to have one of the strongest defences.

“Rodon’s partnership with Ethan Ampadu was exceptional last season, right until towards the end – but the blame doesn’t lie with any of those as nobody really stepped up. So with Rodon being available for them to get, it made absolute sense.”

Leeds United must build from the back

As Goodman points out, a strong defence is key to any hopes Leeds have of earning automatic promotion next season – and that is the ultimate aim.

The Whites’ defence was incredibly solid for the vast majority of last season, before ultimately fading near the end as first place became third place.

Seeing Gray depart is undoubtedly a massive blow for the Whites not just for this coming season but across a number of years to come.

However, the youngster was likely going to be used in central midfield again next season anyway, so it does not alter Leeds’ need for another right-back.

The central-defensive positions are now locked in, meaning the club have a month or so to strengthen either side to ensure United’s defence is the strongest in the division.
