Banish shower limescale with ‘efficient’ one-hour method

Over time, limescale can block the nozzles on shower heads which can lead to a reduced water pressure.

Not only that, but the look of limescale can be unpleasant and it may be stubborn to remove if not done as soon as possible.

Neil from Bust The Dust said: “One of the most cost-effective and efficient solutions to remove limescale is using distilled white vinegar.

“Start by removing the shower head by unscrewing it from the hose or pipe. Pour the distilled white vinegar into a zip-lock bag until the shower head is fully submerged.

“Place the shower head in the bag and secure it, leaving it to soak for at least an hour. The acetic acid in the vinegar will dissolve the mineral deposits.”

After soaking, remove the shower head from the bag before spraying it with a disinfectant to kill any remaining bacteria.

Finally, reattach the shower head and run the hot water before getting in the shower to flush through any remaining limescale.

Neil added: “Distilled white vinegar is not only effective but also environmentally friendly and safe to use. It’s a fantastic alternative to harsh chemical cleaners.”

However, if you do not have any vinegar in your cupboard, lemon juice is another effective and cheap solution.

The expert said: “Lemon juice contains citric acid, which works similarly to acetic acid in vinegar. Plus, it leaves a pleasant, fresh scent in your bathroom.”

Pour enough lemon juice into a zip lock bag to submerge the shower head and follow the same soaking process as with the vinegar method.

Both lemon juice and distilled vinegar can be purchased from most supermarkets, both under £1.

Neil continued: “Regular maintenance is key to preventing significant limescale build-up. Clean your shower head at least once a month.

“In hard water areas, you may need to do it more frequently. Keeping on top of it ensures a better shower experience and prolongs the life of your shower head.”

For stubborn limescale, use a soft brush or an old toothbrush to gently scrub the nozzles after soaking.

Make sure to avoid using abrasive materials that could scratch the surface of the shower head and always reattach the head properly to prevent leaks.
