Moment Centre Court erupts as England beat Switzerland

Novak Djokovic’s Wimbledon clash was temporarily halted on Centre Court – as English football fans celebrated the penalty shootout win.

England booked their spot in the semi-finals of Euro 2024 with a nervy 5-3 shootout victory over Switzerland following a 1-1 draw.

Trent Alexander-Arnold smashed home the winning spot-kick at 7.40pm.

At the exact same time, Djokovic was in the middle of the second set against Alexei Popyrin of Australia – having surprisingly dropped the opener.

Popyrin was about to serve at 1-4 30-30 when suddenly a massive cheer went up around the 15,000-seater stadium.

And that was because plenty of supporters inside the venue were keeping tabs on events in Dusseldorf.

So when England secured their passage to the final four, fans could not help but celebrate.

As the huge noise echoed around, Djokovic stepped back from his return position and wiped his forehead with his sweatband.

He then jokingly pretended to take a penalty – with his left foot rather than his troublesome right knee, which has a grey support on.

And Popyrin hilariously mimed diving to attempt to save it.

Swiatek on Wimbledon woes

World No1 Iga Swiatek was asked about how determined she is to tackle her Wimbledon demons one day, having been dumped out by Yulia Putuntseva.

The Pole, 23, said: “I mean, if I would have another Wimbledon in two months, I would be really, really determined. For sure I’ll focus really hard right now to work for it.

“It’s going to be in a year, so I’m not sure what’s going to happen in a year.

“Obviously I am determined, like, on every tournament. Actually, this part of the season is not easy because it’s the middle of the season, we’re switching surfaces.

“For me going from this kind of tennis where I felt like I’m playing the best tennis in my life to another surface where I kind of struggle a little bit more, it’s not easy.

“All that stuff really combines to me not really having a good time in Wimbledon.

“Again, I feel like if I’m going to do a better job at recovering and if I will have more energy coming into the tournament, I can work through that and just, yeah, focus on the right stuff.”

Dark night rises

Taylor Fritz pulled through in straight sets and will face Alexander Zverev in round four.

But his clash with Alejandro Tabilo of Chile finished outside on No2 Court at a staggering 9.30pm.

And it was virtually dark outside by the time it did.

Fritz will be delighted to get through without having to come back and finish off tomorrow.

Djokovic survives minor scare

Just like England, the seven-time champion is also safely through.

Like England, he went behind by dropping the first set.

But he showed grit and determination to fight back and get the win.

He prevailed 4-6 6-3 6-4 7-6 and will take on talented young Dane Holger Rune in round four.
