Moyross jockey Wesley Joyce among winners in terrific spell for Limerick connections
BALLINGARRY’S Billy Lee and Moyross jockey Wesley Joyce were both in the winners’ enclosure at Roscommon on Tuesday last.
Lee was the big scorer on the day as he teamed up Paddy Twomey to land the Listed Lenebane Stakes on the four-year-old La Isla Mujeres. Owned by Moyglare Stud, the 7/2 chance raced up with the pace and asserted from over a furlong from the finish to win by a cosy three and a half lengths from the John Nallen-trained 16/1 shot Cristal Clere.
Lee had earlier won the second leg of the seven-furlong handicap on the Edward Lynam-trained Gosford. The Trevor Dalzell-owned four-year-old didn’t get the clearest of runs but came with a late effort to win by half a length from Gavin Cromwell’s Saffredi.
Wesley Joyce’s success came on the Philip Byrne-trained Out On Friday which scored the narrowest of wins in the second of the 10-furlong handicaps. Owned and bred by Anthony Deegan, the 14/1 shot made all the running and gamely held on to win by a nose from Slieve Binnian with Henry de Bromhead’s Annexation only a shorthead away in third place.
Rathkeale trainer Eric McNamara and Shanagolden jockey Chris Hayes combined to take the concluding 12-furlong handicap at Tipperary on Wednesday with the four-year-old Ifitwasme. In the colours of owner Cian Wilmot, the 13/2 chance came from of the pace to lead early inside the final furlong and at the line he had two and a quarter lengths to spare over the David Marnane-trained Crypto Crash.
The in-form Wesley Joyce was back in the winners’ enclosure on the double at Bellewstown on Thursday. He partnered the Mick Mulvany-trained Rathbranchurch to land the five-furlong handicap to get the ball rolling. Locally owned by Finbarr Dardis, the four-year-old added to a win at Navan last October when getting up close to the finish to beat Paddy Twomey’s Air Force One, ridden by Billy Lee, by half a length at odds of 4/1.
The Limerick apprentice followed up when taking the second leg of the 14-furlong handicap on the Hugh Finegan-trained Futurum Regem. A 14/1 chance in the colours of owner Morgan Ryan, the eight-year-old led fully three furlongs from the finish and came home three and a quarter lengths clear of the Eric McNamara-trained Say It So.
At odds of 150/1, Eaglewood won the concluding fillies’ bumper at Tipperary on Thursday for Crecora trainer Lenny Flynn. A second winner of the week for County Cork amateur Cal Shine, the Rebecca May-owned four-year-old gained a definite advantage over a furlong from the finish and battled well to beat the Shark Hanlon-trained 5/2 favourite Pure Logic, ridden by Patrick Mullins, by half a length.
Matthew Smith was the first of the locals into the winners’ enclosure at Bellewstown on Friday evening where the Chris Hayes-ridden Blackcastle Storm won the eight-furlong handicap. Owned by the Up The Bog Road Syndicate, the 4/1 favourite battled well from the furlong-pole to beat Tom Gibney’s Imposing Supreme by half a length.
Hayes and Smith followed up as the Michael Ellis-owned Eruption took the five-furlong handicap by the same winning margin. The 100/30 chance headed the front-running 3/1 favourite Comein Comein close to the finish to score.
Linger For Longer backed up her win at Tipperary when taking the six and a half-furlong rated race for trainer Austin Leahy at Limerick on Sunday. Dylan Browne McMonagle was again in the saddle as the Irish Equine Syndicate-owned 9/1 chance comfortably held Pat Flynn’s Imperial Dream by half a length.
Ballingarry trainer Charles Byrnes and his son Philip won the three-mile one-furlong handicap hurdle at Sligo on Sunday with the Cathal Byrnes-owned I Am Spider Man. A winner at the course last month, the seven-year-old followed up with a ready one and a quarter-length victory over Shane Broderick’s Sphagnum.
