Shane Ó Curraighín appointed RTÉ North West Correspondent

RTÉ has announced journalist Shane Ó Curraighín as its new North West Correspondent.

Mr Ó Curraighín, from Teileann in the Donegal Gaeltacht, takes over from Eileen Magnier, who retired in May after nearly four decades in the role.

He will take up the role in August, reporting and providing analysis across all RTÉ News platforms on social, economic, cultural and political developments in the North West region including all of Donegal, Leitrim and Sligo.

Mr Ó Curraighín joined RTÉ as a multimedia journalist in 2016, and has covered a wide range of major news stories across Ireland, reporting across television, radio and digital platforms including 7LÁ, Nuacht RTÉ and TG4, as well as RTÉ News Online.

He previously worked as a video journalist with Below the Radar TV in Belfast, and as a lecturer with Dublin City University.

“As somebody who grew up in the region, I am delighted to be taking up the role of North West Correspondent. I am honoured to have been given the opportunity to continue the great work that Eileen Magnier did over the past four decades,” Mr Ó Curraighín said.

He added: “I’m looking forward to covering the stories that matter to the people of Donegal, Leitrim and Sligo. The impact of the defective blocks crisis, challenges in healthcare, housing, infrastructure, fishing and farming are just some of the important issues I look forward to covering.

“Tá mé ag súil go mór le scéalta mhuintir an iarthuaiscirt a chur os comhair an phobail.”
