Garda Ombudsman investigate collision involving car and lorry near Limerick-Cork border

The Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (GSOC) are investigating a road traffic collision which took place in Ballyhea, Charleville, Cork.

The collision between a lorry and a car took place shortly after 9pm on Saturday, July 6, 2024.

The driver of the car, a male in his 50s who is understood to be a member of An Garda Síochána, was taken from the scene to Cork University Hospital with “serious injuries.”

The referral to the Ombudsman was made by a Garda Superintendent under section 102(1) of the Garda Síochána Act, 2005.

This section provides the referral of “any matter that appears…to indicate that the conduct of a member of the Garda Síochána may have resulted in the death of, or serious harm to, a person.”

The matter is now under examination by GSOC.

His condition is understood to be stable and the driver of the lorry did not require immediate medical treatment.
