‘No kid remembers their best day in front of the TV’ – how one viral tweet started a heated debate over our childhood memories
There is a lot of concern about children’s screentime but is it so different to when we were growing up? And how can we make it a more positive and valuable experience for our kids?
As tweets go, it was sure to garner attention. Though my suspicion is that Natalia Barbour, a sustainability/transport professor in Florida, had little idea quite how strong the reaction to her seemingly innocent tweet would be.
Posting a photo of a child cycling down a dirt path and flanked by greenery, Barbour wrote: “No kid remembers their best day in front of the TV”. A swathe of Gen-X and millennials responded with a fairly robust and unanimous “I beg to differ”. (In the end, Barbour later tweeted: “This post reached 15 million people it turns out everyone and their aunts remember their best day in front of the TV”).
