Lewistown Borough Council talks infrastructure

LEWISTOWN — Lewistown Borough Council members Wednesday discussed infrastructure projects among other agenda items at their monthly meeting at the local municipal building.

Borough Manager Kim Zimmerman spoke about the progress for a wastewater treatment plant project. The EADS Group, a business that specializes in municipal engineering and many other related services like surveying/mapping, shared positive forward movement in the repair and cleaning of Digester No. 1 at the wastewater treatment plant.

This digester received emptying, cleaning and repair services at the current stage of the repair project. The $1 million loan used to support this project was not exhausted in any way. The remaining money from the loan will be used to clean as much as possible, if not all of the other digesters used to clean water at the wastewater treatment plant.

Zimmerman added that EADS and the borough will perform smoke testing of the sanitary sewer system from July 15-17. According to information posted on the borough’s Facebook account, the lines tested are at the following locations: West Fourth Street, West Fifth Street, West Sixth Street, and surrounding areas from South Wayne Street west to Howard Avenue.

Residents seeing smoke come out of vents or storm drains should not be alarmed. Anyone living in a home in the test area and having smoke coming into the home through a drain should simply run water down the affected drain. Questions may be directed to the borough office.

The borough manager then shared that the Lewistown municipal building will close at noon on Friday for the borough’s employee appreciation day.

He also spoke about Kishacoquillas Creek debris removal, upcoming cost estimates to work with PennDOT, a police car bid, and more with updates to come later in the summer.

In other business, members also:

• Approved the $80,000 repair and cleaning work done on digester No. 1 as previously stated.

• Approved slip lining, a pipe rehabilitation technique, the pipelines on Center Street in the amount of $21,886.85.

• Approved an extended handicapped parking spot on 7 Chestnut Street upon payment in the amount of $25.

•Approve an $11,445 grant for a wireless router to improve technological communications from the Lewistown Police Department’s vehicles.
