NFL insider: Dak Prescott on another team in ‘25 is not ‘farfetched’

At first thought, the idea of seeing Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott in another uniform sounds unrealistic. A Cowboys uniform is the only one he’s worn since entering the league in 2016, after all.

But as the offseason continues to linger, and the chances of Prescott playing on an expiring deal seem likelier and likelier, the idea of him playing elsewhere after this season is, according to one NFL expert, “not farfetched.”

That’s what ESPN NFL insider Dan Graziano wrote on Thursday in an article about whether some league storylines should be considered overreactions, or not overreactions.

For his reasoning on Prescott, Graziano pointed to a couple of well-known factors. Prescott has a no-trade clause. He also has a no-tag clause, meaning he couldn’t be franchise tagged after this season, as he was already once in his Cowboys career. Prescott also has a $40 million cap hit next season even if he’s not on the roster.

That’s all to say that Prescott has leverage, and lots of it.

“The team is in a tough spot …. And [Prescott] doesn’t have to do a deal with the Cowboys unless it’s exactly the deal he wants,” Graziano wrote. “That’s why the possibility of Prescott hitting the market as an unrestricted free agent quarterback — and cashing in with a deal likely to exceed $60 million per year — is not farfetched.

Graziano continued: “To be clear, this is NOT what I am predicting. I still think the most likely outcome here is that Prescott and the Cowboys find a way to get a deal done before he becomes a free agent. Heck, they could even get one done before the start of this season for all we know. But if they don’t finalize something before or during the season, I think it would be a massive mistake to rule out this possibility.”

Prescott isn’t the only one on an expiring contract. Cooper Rush and Trey Lance, the other quarterbacks on the roster, are also unrestricted free agents after this season.

Outside of the quarterback room, the Cowboys also have to figure out a new deal for star wide receiver CeeDee Lamb. He’s currently scheduled to make $17.9 million on the fifth-year option, but that’s not enough for a player who was a first-team All-Pro selection last season. Even every coach on staff is on an expiring contract.

If Prescott, a MVP runner-up last season, were to hit free agency, he’d surely have suitors.

Graziano listed the Raiders, Giants, Jets, Saints, Steelers, Titans, Rams and Seahawks as potential suitors.

Whether Prescott stays or leaves after this season remains to be seen. One thing is certain: The longer he goes without a deal, the less farfetched the idea of him in another uniform becomes.
