Three people brought to safety following multi-agency response at Cork beach 

Three paddleboarders were rescued in Cork yesterday following reports of difficulty in the water near a popular beach.

The incident, which happened shortly after 5.15pm, saw two teenagers and one adult brought to safety from approximately 500m off Front Strand Beach in Youghal.

The alarm was raised by local lifeguards who had spotted the individuals and made the call to the Irish Coast Guard.

Youghal RNLI Helm Jack Nolan alongside crew members Liam Keogh, Joe O’Connor and Noel Joyce launched the inshore lifeboat and arrived on scene within 10 minutes.

Upon arrival, the volunteer crew observed one male in the water holding onto the paddleboard with two younger males sitting on top, alongside two lifeguards on surfboards who were with them at the time.

Youghal RNLI Launch Authority, John Innes said thanked all involved in the response. 

“This call out was a multi-agency rescue with our colleagues from Rescue 117 in Waterford, the Guards, National Ambulance Service, Youghal lifeguards and Youghal Coast Guard unit all in attendance.

“It was a great response and we would like to thank everyone involved and we wish the casualties well.

“With the weather getting warmer and more inviting, we want to remind people of the importance of always going prepared for your activity including wearing a suitable flotation device such as buoyancy aids as these casualties did, as the weather can be very changeable.”
