The streets of the Hamptons are lined with designer boutiques and thronged by film stars and musicians who ­migrate to the seaside resort every summer.

But all have been upstaged this year by a lobster salad and a pot of guacamole. The lobster salad appeared at a family-run grocery store in East Hampton, priced at $120 a pound. The guacamole was on sale at a fishmongers for $30 a tub.

Even in a stretch of Long Island, New York, where there are only six houses worth less than a million dollars, these prices raised eyebrows. But they were merely the tip of the iceberg lettuce. Soon videos were circulating on social media featuring boxes of prepared ­salad and vegetables that were more expensive than dinner
