John Hunt has made a statement in response to messages of support from the racing community following a devastating family tragedy.

The BBC commentator and Sky Sports Racing presenter’s wife Carol, 61 and daughters Hannah, 28, and Louise, 25, were killed at their home in Bushey, Hertfordshire.

Dozens of heartbreaking tributes were left on social media in the aftermath, as police launched a murder investigation. Hunt, a popular member of the horse racing press room and at BBC 5 Live, issued a statement today via Matt Chapman.

During coverage from Ascot, his Sky colleague told viewers: “Not withstanding the horrid evil which swept through our lives wreaking devastation on an unimaginable scale, the counter to that has been the breathtaking messages of support, some of which are still to be read. Amy my eldest daughter has been magnificently inspirational with her control and support for me which I am trying so hard to replicate. Every message has felt so important, the same as a reassuring hug. We know people are worried about us – we will get through this. Sending love to everyone, John.”

Hunt and Amy had earlier expressed to the wider media how the trauma they are experiencing “cannot be put into words” and asked for space to begin the grieving process.

Carol, Hannah and Louise were found fatally injured at their home in Bushey, just after 7pm on Tuesday. In tribute, there has been a minute’s silence at several horse racing meetings including the July Festival and Epsom, where Hunt was due to call races on Thursday. Jockeys competing wore black armbands as a mark of respect.

A moving speech from his fellow commentator and close friend Richard Hoiles on ITV Racing has been widely shared.

“It’s impossible to rationalise such a heinous, pointless and terrible act in modern day society really,” he said. “I’ve known John for 30 years, we started out together. And during that time he has become one of the most respected and liked members of the press room.
