Inside an Irish pub as England lose the Euros Final for second time in a row
England fans around the world are heartbroken – but they’ll find little sympathy in Cork city tonight as Leesiders celebrate Spain’s well-earned victory in the Euros.
The Three Lions have just lost their second European Championship finals in a row after a hard-fought clash at the Olympiastadion in Berlin. Spain were the favourites going into this evening’s match-up and came away with a 2-1 victory, securing the win with a final score just 8 minutes before the final whistle.
After a slow start, Spain’s Nico Williams drew first blood early in the second half following a skilful pass through the English defence. The Three Lions fought back with a late equaliser, but they didn’t have long to celebrate before their fate was sealed by a terrific goal by Mikel Oyarzabal in the 96th minute.
England countered with two solid attacks before the match’s end, but sadly it was too little too late and the ref blew the final whistle after four minutes of extra time.
A new vid shows Leesider’s live reaction to the victory at the Woolshed bar in Cork city. You can see the exact moment die-hard Spanish fans realised the match was over, with many leaping up and hugging as roars erupted throughout the bar. After a minute of cheers, patrons broke out the age-old ‘Campeones Ole Ole’ chant – signalling the start of a long night of celebrations for Spain supporters around the world.
This match was a heartbreaking repeat of the 2020 tournament for many English fans, where they also lost out to Italy after a tense penalty shootout. Spain now has the most Euros victories of any country in the world, with their latest win breaking their tie with Germany.
