LIVE: Several gardai called to Galway protest as video shows clash

Several units of gardai have been called to the scene of an anti-immigrant protest this evening in Galway.

A video online has emerged of garda public order units at a site in Carraroe that has been chosen to house asylum seekers from various different backgrounds.

In the video, asylum seekers can be seen being helped off the van and into the property by uniformed gardai. All the while this is happening there are lines of public order units protecting both the asylum seekers and other gardai, in case the protest turns violent.

As the asylum seekers get escorted inside, you can hear one protestor scream “no more refugees send them back or oversees” while another protestor can be heard saying: “I better head back to work to pay for all of these.”

Galway Beo has contacted the garda press office for a statement.
