Person dies after ‘falling into running plane engine’ at Amsterdam airport

KLM airline said on Wednesday there had been a fatal incident at Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport, in which a person died after ending up in a running aircraft engine.

Dutch media had reported on the incident earlier on Wednesday. The circumstances are under investigation, the airline, which is part of Air France-KLM, said in a statement.

Dutch Royal Military Police, in a statement, said: “An incident occurred this afternoon on the Schiphol platform where a person fell into a running aircraft engine and died. The Marechaussee starts an investigation”.

Schipol Airport also confirmed a “horrible incident” had occurred today and that a number of passengers and workers had witnessed the fatality.

“Today there was a horrible incident where a person ended up in an airplane engine. Our thoughts go out to the relatives and we care for the passengers and colleagues who witnessed this. The Royal Military Police is currently conducting an investigation,” the airport said in a statement.
