Last week’s selection Monfrid was beaten only two lengths at 20/1 in the 7f handicap at Goodwood on Saturday. Connections bypassed the valuable Silver Bowl at Haydock but could win a big pot with the three-year-old this season.

Prominent from a middle draw, the improving son of Zoustar pressed the leaders inside the final furlong and can improve off his fair mark of 82.

Across the card, Dark Cloud Rising will come on markedly from his debut eighth in the 6f novice at York. David O’Meara’s highly regarded son of Dark Angel was prominent but weakened over a furlong out. Well bought at £85,000, the quality colt is closely related to 5f winner Albion Square and the dam won over 7f on the all-weather.

Thirty five minutes later, Lethal Nymph ran into very talented winner Starlust in the 5f handicap.

Paul Midgley’s improving five-year-old pressed the leader over three-out and kept on in the final furlong.

Disappointing at the same track ten days ago, Lethal Nymph is handicapped to win and Aiden Brookes’ 5lb allowance is an enormous benefit; Midgely rates the young pilot extremely highly. Connections hope to win a big pot this season.

Later on the card, Project Geofin would have finished closer with a clearer run when fourth in the 7f three-year-old handicap.

Geoff Oldroyd’s gelded son of Calyx dwelt at the start and was detached five-out. He still had plenty to do when switched left over two-out and was making smooth headway when short of room soon after. Switched right before the furlong pole, he ran on well to be nearest at the finish and can win off his mark.

The step up in trip was a major benefit and Project Geofin will be fitter for this return from 296 days off.

In the concluding 7f handicap, Helter Skelter was denied a clear run at a crucial stage when a fast-finishing eighth of 18.

Rebecca Menzies’ four-year-old was held up in midfield but short of room when keeping on over a furlong out. He ran on again when in the clear and would have been much closer with better luck.

The Irish import was a close fourth over this trip at Ayr a month ago and his shrewd new connections are quickly finding the key.

Three to look out for this week…

Blue Point Express was sent from North Yorkshire to East Anglia for her debut in the 5f fillies’ maiden at Yarmouth on Wednesday but didn’t run, as the ground turned good to soft.

Charlie Johnston’s well bred daughter of Blue Point was due to be ridden by William Buick, so the signs were very positive; keep her in mind on drier ground.

The quality filly is entered at Nottingham on Sunday and Ayr on Monday and connections will be hoping for a dry spell.

She cost 40,000 euros as a yearling, £68,000 as a two-year-old and is a half-sister to 6f winner Rock Of England.

Notebook horse New Image is entered over 7f at Musselburgh on Saturday and deserves a change of luck. He was very unfortunate when a close fourth over the same trip at Thirsk this month.

David O’Meara’s well treated gelding lost a good position when short of room two-out and was repeatedly denied a clear run from over a furlong out; he was also short of room again near the finish.

Warda Jamila heads to Hamilton for the 1m1f fillies’ handicap on Sunday.

Andrew Balding’s classy daughter of Calyx exploited a very favourable mark when landing a punt for the Notebook in a similar race at Ascot three weeks ago and is progressing rapidly.
