Thornton defends at Druids Glen and makes it a PGA hat trick – Irish Golfer Magazine

Simon Thornton admits he hasn’t done much practice since returning home from the PGA Playoffs in Cyprus despite winning three events in a row on the PGA in Ireland region.

Thornton shot a course record 63 in Rathfarnham last week before winning at the Jameson Links. He kept that momentum rolling with a two-shot win at The Irish Life Druids Glen Pro-Am where a four-under 68 was good enough to see him defend his title and make it three successive wins on the region to start the season.

“I played nicely, played with a lot of freedom. Hitting it pretty well, chipping well, putting well, yeah, everything is good at the moment. The freedom is the big thing being able to go out pick a target and hit it, if it comes off great, if it doesn’t, we go again.”

Thornton secured starts at Wentworth and the AMGEN Irish Open over the spring while he has also played his way onto the GB&I PGA Cup team this year.

The former European Tour winner only picked up the clubs three weeks ago after a break and he admits he is surprised to see how well he has started the Irish season.

“I wasn’t doing anything like that! I came back from Cyprus and didn’t do much because the weather was brutal so I picked up the clubs three weeks ago and started. I’m not very technical anyway so I don’t need much work to get going once I see the ball hitting the target I get used to it.”
