Jobs, communal speeches, women’s safety: BHU students weigh Modi’s tenure, campus life

In this episode of Another Election Show from Varanasi, we sat with the students of the city’s Banaras Hindu University to talk about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s representation from the constituency, works of the central government and the local issues.  

Most of the students expressed resentment over lack of employment opportunities, while many criticised the “unparliamentary language” used by the PM. The students also spotlighted the issue of women safety, climate change, and just opportunities for tribals and those belonging to scheduled castes.

The incident of the alleged sexual assault of a BHU-IIT student in September last year was also discussed. Several students alleged that the governing party was trying to save the accused who reportedly worked with the BJP IT cell.

Speaking about campus life, the students complained that the PhD students’ scholarship of Rs 8,000 has not been increased in ten years, while they also accused the BHU administration of being “dictatorial” and “protecting goons”. A student said, “Half a dozen sections are imposed on the students who protest on campus and goons are given protection.”
