Food safety warning issued over popular desserts sold in SuperValu

A food safety warning has been issued for batches of a popular dessert sold in a number of retailers, including SuperValu, which may be unsafe for some people to eat.

An Allergen Alert was issued on Thursday for specific batches of The Elizabeth Ann Dessert Collection apple and berries tarts. The tarts are sold in a number of SuperValu supermarkets, as well as in Donnybrook Fair stores, and a number of other retailers.

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland said certain batches of the tarts contain sodium metabisulphite (sulphur dioxide) which is not declared in the list of ingredients. Therefore, they could be unsafe for people who are allergic or intolerant to sulphur dioxide.

A spokesperson said: “The above batches of The Elizabeth Ann Dessert Collection apple and berries tarts contain sodium metabisulphite (sulphur dioxide) which is not declared in the list of ingredients. This may make the batches unsafe for consumers who are allergic to or intolerant of sulphur dioxide.”

The affected items are The Elizabeth Ann Dessert Collection The Mmmm Tart! Apple and Berry pack size: 450g, and The Elizabeth Ann Dessert Collection Apple Raspberry & Blueberry Tart; pack size 575g, with all best before dates up to and including June 5.

Anyone who has implicated tarts at home and who is allergic or intolerant of sulphur dioxide is advised to not eat them, and return them for a refund.
