Three new Active Travel projects up and running in the city – Connacht Tribune – Galway City Tribune

Three Active Travel projects in the city are up and running after they were officially opened by Minister for Transport Eamon Ryan.

Alongside Mayor Eddie Hoare, the Minister attended events to open the Eglinton Canal Active Travel Scheme, the new cantilever pedestrian bridge at Wolfe Tone Bridge and the School Street at Scoil Iognáid on Raleigh Row.

The Eglinton Canal Project involved the resurfacing of paths From Father Griffin Road at Monroes to the junction with University Road, while the new €1.8 million footbridge on Claddagh side of Wolfe Tone Bridge mirrors the one on the opposite side, with the addition of two new pedestrian crossings at either end of the bridge.

Meanwhile, the €530,000 School Street project at Raleigh Row included installing widended footpaths, the removal of a number of parking spaces and road resurfacing to encourage active travel among pupils at the Jes.

“I think that these three projects, along with all the other work that is taking place across Galway City, will help encourage residents and visitors to see walking, cycling or wheeling as a viable and more attractive transport option, making Galway a safer, cleaner city and decreasing its carbon emissions,” said Minister Ryan.
