RTÉ 2FM announces its summer schedule

Today marks a red letter day for RTÉ 2FM as both Doireann Garrihy and The 2 Johnnies say farewell to the station.

Along with mid-morning host Jennifer Zamparelli also “hanging up her mic” on the 9am slot, since the announcements, speculation has been rife about possible moves to replace these four key voices on 2FM.

At midday the summer schedule was announced, so who will we be tuning into this summer break?

Starting in the morning, the 2FM Breakfast team of Carl Mullan and Donncha O’Callaghan will be joined by their long-term friend and on-air pal Aifric O’Connell.

Laura Fox had already been confirmed as the successor to Jennifer Zamparelli for the 9am – 12pm weekday slot with The Laura Fox Show. Tracy Clifford will continue to bring listeners through their lunch with new tunes, and big hits, from 12pm – 3pm.

And then in the afternoon, 2FM veteran Lottie Ryan will be presenting the drivetime slot with David O’Reilly, taking over the reins from The 2 Johnnies.

Lottie is a familiar voice to listeners on 2FM and David has been building his profile on the station, regularly joining Jennifer Zamparelli in her slot ‘Jen’s friends’ and he also co-presents a podcast called Any News with Brendan Courtney.

Head of RTÉ 2FM Dan Healy said: “We are very happy that for the summer we are strengthening our schedule with 2FM homegrown talent with Aifric, Lottie and David.

“It always starts with the audience first and this summer’s schedule is built with only them in mind. I believe that 2FM has the most exciting mission in RTÉ. Our mission is to inform and entertain younger audiences with wonderful music, chat and sport. The summer is full of music and sport and that is where we will be.

“We will be working hard to continue to build a station with the next generation of 2FM presenters and there’s no shortage of those.”

An emotional Doireann Garrihy said she has had “the time of my life” as she signed off from her final 2FM Breakfast show on Friday morning.

The 2 Johnnies, Johnny “Smacks” McMahon and Johnny “B” O’Brien, will also finish up on 2FM on Friday, with the last episode of their afternoon show Drive It with The 2 Johnnies set to kick off at 3pm.
