Don’t tie a ribbon on your suitcase, warns Dublin Airport baggage handler

As we approach the peak travel season at Dublin Airport, with the June Bank Holiday expected to be particularly hectic, a baggage handler has shared some essential tips to ensure your luggage gets through the airport swiftly and safely.

Losing your luggage is one of the worst travel nightmares, right up there with cancelled flights and rerouted planes. Passengers are eager to do whatever they can to streamline and expedite the airport process, and a Dublin Airport worker is sharing his wisdom to guarantee your luggage reaches its destination.

In a chat with RSVP Live, John, a Dublin Airport baggage handler, advised holidaymakers to remove the identification ribbons often tied onto luggage, as they can cause delays in getting your bags to the plane. “Ribbons that people tie onto their suitcases to help identify them can cause issues with the bag being scanned in the baggage hall,” he said.

“If the bag can’t be scanned automatically it can end up in manual processing, which could mean your bag doesn’t make it to the flight.”

He also shared other luggage tips:

• “Take old stickers off the bag, it can cause confusion with the scanning process
• Place your suitcase wheels up for less damage
• Don’t ever pack Marzipan in your luggage. It has the same density as some explosives so your bag will be removed and you’ll be called from the plane for a bag search”.

Meanwhile, Dublin Airport has issued a warning to customers without a car park booking to find alternative ways to get to the airport, as all spaces have been snapped up ahead of the Bank Holiday Weekend.

Dublin Airport has issued a warning to passengers ahead of what promises to be a hectic weekend. They’ve posted on social media, previously referred to as Twitter, stating: “All of our long-term car parks are sold out for this weekend. Only limited spaces are available in our short-term car parks. Passengers without a booking should plan to travel to the airport via bus, taxi or drop-off.”

daa’s media spokesman Graeme McQueen noted the high volume of traffic but assured a hassle-free experience. He said: “We’re now moving into the peak summer season, with families starting to head off on their summer holidays and with lots of tourists arriving in Dublin ahead of visits to all four corners of Ireland.”

Only a handful of spots remain in the short-term carparks due to the significant demand.

He counselled those yet to secure parking not to worry, saying: “There’s no need to panic for those without a booking, with more than 1,000 bus services set to serve Dublin Airport every single day this weekend, connecting directly to all 32 counties on the island.”

He advised coming to the airport by alternative means like buses, taxis, or being dropped off by someone else. He added: “We can’t wait to welcome everyone this weekend,”.

In order to prevent any mishaps, Dublin Airport has recommended travellers to plan their means of getting to the airport well ahead of time. This is to ensure a smooth start to their journey.
