Kevin Sinfield pays tribute to ‘brave and inspiring’ Rob Burrow as codes unite after rugby league legend’s death

England coach Kevin Sinfield has led the tributes to friend and former team-mate Rob Burrow, who has passed away at the age of 41.

Burrow was diagnosed with motor neurone disease in 2019 and sadly lost his battle with the degenerative condition on Sunday.

The Leeds Rhinos legend created a remarkable legacy, helping to earn millions for charity after his diagnosis.

Sinfield was at the forefront of that effort, taking on extreme physical challenges in aid of Burrow and the fight against MND. As a result, the duo raised more than £15m for charity over the past four-and-a-half years.

‘A beacon of hope’

“Today was the day that I hoped would never come,” Sinfield said in a statement.

“The world has lost a great man and a wonderful friend to so so many. You fought so bravely until the end and became a beacon of hope and inspiration, not only for the MND community but for all those who saw and heard your story.

“My love and thoughts go to your beautiful family, Lindsey, Macy, Maya, and Jackson, to your lovely parents Geoff & Irene, sisters Joanne and Claire and your wider family and friends.

“You will continue to inspire me every single day. I have lost a dear friend and I will never forget the special times we shared both on and off the pitch.

“I would always say that you were pound for pound the toughest player I ever played alongside, however since your diagnosis, you were the toughest and bravest man I have ever met.

“The last 4 and a half years you showed the world what living and loving looked like and this was always done with the biggest smile on your face.

“I will miss you my little mate.

“All my love, Kev x.”

Doddie Weir: Tributes pour in as Scotland legend loses battle with motor neurone disease

Gloucester’s tribute

Despite never playing or coaching in rugby union, Burrow’s influence stretched across both codes as he partnered with the late great Doddie Weir and more recently ex-Gloucester lock Ed Slater to raise awareness of MND.

Slater and the Cherry and Whites were also among those to pay tribute to the league legend.

“Gloucester Rugby is devastated to learn of the passing of Rob Burrow CBE,” the Premiership club’s statement read.

“MND is regrettably a disease close to all our hearts. The tireless work of Rob, Lindsey and the Burrow family to help those affected, and to work towards a cure, will forever be a lasting legacy in the fight against MND.

“To the Burrow Family. Our thoughts are with you now and always.”

Slater added: “Thank you Rob. RIP️. You inspired so many people with and without MND alongside your beautiful family and friends.

“Say hello to the big giraffe x.”
