Four diversions placed as busy Galway road shut for eight days straight

Galway City Council has announced the closure of a major road in the city that will remain closed to traffic for more than a month.

Starting today, Tuesday, June 4, a section of Shantall Road will be closed 24/7 until Friday, July 12. A massive diversion operation has been announced by the city council.




The diversion routes from Shantalla Road will be via Enda’s Road, Costelloe Road, Newcastle Road. From St. Helens Road will be via Newcastle Road, Costelloe Road, Enda’s Road. From St. Marys Road will be via Newcastle Road, Costelloe Road, Enda’s Road. From Newcastle Road will be via Costelloe Road and Enda’s Road.

Localised access will be maintained for the duration of the works. Locals have let their feelings be known over ths extended road closure with one calling it “absolutely ridiculous.”

One said: “Absolutely ridiculous. Closing that road for over a month. For what reason? As if traffic doesn’t be bad enough.” A second angry local said: “What’s going on there over a months work it’s going to be mayhem there.”

Separately, Irish Rail passengers in Galway have been warned of a change of layout at Ceannt Station as work continues in upgrading it. Passengers can expect to see the first of those changes after Irish Rail confirmed that a new entrance to the station will be in effect starting on Monday, June 10.
