2024 NFL Offseason Thread
villagewarrior said… (original post) I think it is the playbook but execution is way off. You get teams like the Giants who way overpay for a mediocre QB and then don’t do …
The Giants are an interesting example. Robert’s position to start this mini-thread was teams should draft QBs, then give them receiving talent and keep them upright. In the draft after Jones (2020), the Giants took tackles with 2 of their top 3 picks, one was Andrew Thomas at 4. In 2021, they took Kadarius Toney with their first round pick. In 2022, they took another OL in the first round, and Wandale Robinson in the 2nd. In 2023 they went DB-OL-WR. Between 2020 and 2023, before they had to make a decision on resigning Jones, it looks like of their 11 picks in the first 3 rounds of those drafts, 7 were OL or WR. Now – many of those picks were horrific and unlucky (injuries), but they were at least trying. They also signed Kenny Golladay, who was pretty good in Detroit, only for him to vomit all over himself. They also resigned Saquon (franchise tag).
Then you get this weird timing with Jones playing for ***** coaches, Daboll coming in and leading them to a playoff win, right when he’s up for a new contract. In the biggest sports media city we have.
Easy to see in hindsight. Probably easy to see in the moment that Daboll’s first year was a bit smoke/mirrors. Jones’s ceiling was probably always going to be a poor man’s Alex Smith. And while I wouldn’t have resigned him, you can at least squint and see the justification. (Also – the deal is easy to get out next offseason if Jones falls on his face again.)
