Liverpool release 10 players as Arne Slot wields the axe but shock contract offered to one unexpected player

Liverpool have announced their retained list on the back of the 23/24 season.

Liverpool have confirmed that 10 players have left the club on the back of the 23/24 season.

After their Premier League season ended with a 2-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield, it was confirmed that Thiago Alcantara and Joel Matip would depart the club with their contracts set to expire.

Spanish midfielder Thiago only managed five minutes of football this season after coming on as a late substitute during the 3-1 defeat by Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.

Meanwhile, defender Matip‘s season was cut short after he suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury against Sheffield United in December.

On Wednesday morning, Liverpool confirmed that a total of 10 players will leave.

A statement from the club read: “Liverpool FC has submitted its Premier League retained list following the end of the 2023-24 season, with confirmation of the departure of several senior and Academy players.

“As announced last month, Joel Matip and Thiago Alcantara are set to leave the Reds upon the expiry of their contracts this summer, following eight and four years respectively with the club.”

The likes of Adam Lewis, Melkamu Frauendorf, Mateusz Musialowski, Nathan Giblin, Francis Gyimah, Luke Hewitson, Niall Osborne and Cody Pennington are all set to leave the Reds following the expiry of their deals.

Liverpool have also confirmed that new deals have been offered to Adrian, Jacob Poytress and Reece Trueman.

Liverpool added: “Everyone at Liverpool FC thanks Joel, Thiago, Adam, Melkamu, Mateusz, Nathan, Francis, Luke, Niall and Cody for all their contributions and wishes them each the very best for the future.”

It is poised to be a big summer for Liverpool as they embark on life after Jurgen Klopp, who has left the club after nearly nine years at the helm.

Dutchman Arne Slot has been chosen to lead the club forward on the back of his impressive spell in charge of Feyenoord.

The 45-year-old officially started as Liverpool’s new head coach on June 1, meaning it is likely that the club’s hierarchy made the decision on the 10 players who departed.
