Haydock racing tips: Woodleigh to build on recent success, Triggerman no forlorn each-way hope

17:10 Haydock:  Betfred bet Builder Handicap  (7 furlongs)

All three carry a six-pound penalty into this race, leaving the market headed by Ed Walker’s Arnaz, who won handily at Brighton nine days ago with the promise of more to come, and he should be able to shrug off a five-pound penalty as he teams up with Tom Marquand for the first time.

Alfie Boy’s win came on the same day at Redcar, where he won very cosily over this distance, but while both hold serious claims here, it is Declan Carroll’s much-improved gelding, Woodleigh, who receives our final seal of approval here.

After a winless seven-race juvenile campaign, he finally opened his account at the 10th attempt, and did so with some aplomb over a shorter six-furlong trip at Ripon a week ago.

Taking control of the race two furlongs out, he eased four comfortable lengths clear of the short-priced favourite, with his other six rivals strung out behind, with seemingly enough in the tank to suggest he will take the extra furlong in his stride here, despite the extra six pounds.

Half of that penalty is off-set by the useful three-pound allowance of claimer Zak Wheatley, who continues to impress whenever he is in the saddle..

Suggested best bet: Woodleigh in the 17:10 at Haydock

If the price of that market principal does not appeal, then the lightly-raced Triggerman might be worth a closer look after showing some promise on a couple of his limited outings so far.

Julie Camacho’s gelding missed out by a nose on his second attempt at Newcastle last summer, while his fourth of 14 last time out at the same venue a month ago was no less encouraging as he finished less than a length behind the winner.

All four of his previous efforts have been over six furlongs, but the way he kept on gamely last time out suggests he has the engine to cope with this step up in distance, and might just have enough to split the market leaders to make the frame.

Each-way punt: Triggerman in the 17:10 at Haydock
