NEWTON – Third time’s a charm as Brookline went to Newton North after losing the previous two matches to come away with a stunner in the Div. 1 boys tennis quarterfinals.

It came down to freshman Winston Chan in third singles who took home the third point as the sixth-seeded Warriors downed the No. 3 Tigers 3-2 on the road Thursday.

“It’s just amazing to play (Newton North) three times a year,” said Brookline coach Mike Mowatt. “Both of the times we played them, we lost 3-2. So, just to turn it around (is nice).”

Chan won 6-2 in the first set before battling back from down 4-1 to win 7-6 (7-4) in the second set.

“He’s not a freshman out there,” Mowatt said. “He plays like a junior. He plays a lot of USTA matches, so that really helps him get ready for that type of match and the team is supporting everything.”

Brookline (18-4) came away with two huge wins in doubles as the first doubles squad of Kirin and Ravin Bhatia swept John Washek and Devan Pradham 6-1, 6-0.

In second doubles, Aneesh Shrivastava and Peter Khudyakov needed a third set, but eventually took down William Fine and Jin Greene 6-1, 2-6, 6-0 thanks to an impressive third set performance.

Newton North (17-2) earned a point in first singles as Lochland Seth won 6-2, 6-1 over Deven Devaiah to even it 1-1 after the Warriors won first doubles.

The Tigers tied it up again as Johnny Wastcoat won in straight sets over Dhevin Nahata 7-6 (7-0) and 6-4.

Next up, Brookline will play the winner of Saturday’s Concord-Carlisle/Westford Academy tilt as they look to play in their sixth straight Div. 1 state title match.
