The move comes as the cost-of-living crisis continues to cripple the pockets of people across the country and when high energy prices are still a burden for many households.

Bord Gais Energy is currently offering a 33 per cent discount to new customers.

Currently, households on standard rates are paying around 36 or 37 cent for their electricity – but the Bord Gais Energy discount will equate to a unit rate of just over 24 cent including VAT.

According to bonkers.ie, this means Irish households could save up to €500 per year by availing of the deal and switching electricity providers.

Customers hoping to avail of the new offer must pay by direct debit and agree to standard billing and a one year contract with a variable tariff.

When the one year is up, you can roll over onto a five per cent discount or switch electricity suppliers again.

And Bord Gais aren’t the only company offering Irish households with the opportunity to save their cash.

Electric Ireland is offering a 30 per cent electricity discount and a €100 welcome bonus to new customers.
