Young Carlow man in a coma and ‘fighting for his life’ after tragic accident in Italy

A Go Fund Me page has been set up to cover Tom’s medical expenses and to help get him back home to Ireland

Tom Eustace from Tullow in Co Carlow was in Rome, Italy attending a friend’s wedding with his girlfriend and other friends when a tragic accident occurred.

This accident has left Tom in a coma with life-threatening injuries. The Eustace family say that Tom is currently “fighting for his life”.

Tom’s family are now faced with a long road to recovery that will be both physically and financially demanding. A Go Fund Me page has been set up by the Eustace family to help with Tom’s medical expenses, rehabilitation costs and travel expenses to get him home to Ireland.

“My amazing boyfriend is facing some unexpected challenges right now after being involved in an extremely serious accident in Italy and we’ve set up a GoFundMe campaign to help cover the costs,” explained Tom’s girlfriend Miriam Holden on social media.

“If you can, please consider donating to support him during this tough time. Every little bit helps and your support means more than words can express,” she concluded.

“Tom is an amazing person who has always been there for his friends and family,” added Tom’s family on the Go Fund Me page. “Now he needs our help more than ever. The road to recovery will be long and demanding, both physically and financially. Medical expenses, rehabilitation costs and travel expenses to get him back to Ireland are just some of the challenges we are facing.”

In less than 24 hours, the Go Fund Me page has reached over €67,000 as the local Carlow community and beyond come together in support of a young man and a family who have been integral members of the Tullow community.

The money raised will go directly towards medical expenses including surgeries, treatments, transport and hospital stays. Funds will also be needed for rehabilitation and therapy sessions to aid Tom’s recovery and for any unforeseen expenses related to his care and recovery.Carlow school gets green light for new building to accommodate 750 pupils

“The outpouring of support, messages and calls has been a tremendous source of strength for Tom’s family and girlfriend,” said Tom’s family. “We deeply appreciate every gesture of kindness and support during this difficult time.”

Tom was a member of Tullow Rugby Club until a few years ago and is currently a member of Fighting Cocks GFC club in Co Carlow.

“We are shocked and saddened to hear of Tom’s accident during the week. As many of you know, the Eustace family are one of our neighbours and have many family links within the club, along with Tom playing rugby himself,” said a spokesperson from Tullow RFC on Facebook.

“Please donate what you can towards Tom’s recovery fund. As a club, we send our support to Miriam Holden, the Eustace family, wider family members and many friends at this worrying time.

“Sending all our support and strength to Tom”.
