Dublin show cancelled as bosses issue ‘unfortunate’ announcement with days to go

AN Evening with Margaret Atwood has been unexpectedly cancelled with only three days notice.

Margaret Atwood was due to have a sit down conversation with former President Mary Robinson and Laurie Anderson.

An Evening With Margaret Atwood, Laurie Anderson, and Mary Robinson was due to take place this Sunday at the Board Gais Energy Theatre.

However, they had to cancel the show today with short notice, as one of the guest speakers contracted Covid.

Margaret Atwood, the author of worldwide best-seller, The Handmaid’s Tale, found out she contracted the disease just before she boarded her flight to Dublin.

In a statement regarding the event’s status, the author said: “I’m so sorry to have to tell you that I am no longer able to be in Ireland this weekend.

“I was about to get my flight to Ireland when I tested positive for Covid. I am devastated to have to miss out on the warm welcome the Irish always give me, and to bring disappointment to those who were coming to hear me.

“I am going to reschedule. I don’t know when, because I am laying low, but I will try and be there later in the year. Thank you for understanding.”

The Board Gais Energy Theatre has said that every ticket holder will be refunded in full due to the events cancellation.

The Theatre, along with the guest speakers have suggested they will in time, have a new date set up for another event.

The event’s description reads: “Three extraordinary women – one of the greatest voices of contemporary literature; Ireland’s first woman President and advocate for sustainable global development.

“And one of America’s most engaging and daring creative pioneers – confront some of the most urgent questions of today.”

The evening was due to start at 7.30pm and had tickets starting at €31.50.

The Board Gais said: “While we understand this news is disappointing, we are committed to delivering a memorable event in the near future.

“We will keep you updated on the rescheduled date as soon as possible.

“We appreciate your support and look forward to welcoming you back soon.”

The show would have seen broadcaster and writer John Kelly interview Margaret Atwood about her work on stage.

With Mary Robinson joining later on in the show along with musician and artist Laurie Anderson.
