Bertie hires new AD, head coaches for football & basketball
Bertie High School will have a new-look athletic department for the 2024-2025 school year.
The Falcons have made changes at athletic director, head football coach, boys basketball coach, and girls basketball coach.
Last year, the football program was led by Darius Wesson, who was in his first year. Wesson is a 2009 graduate of Bertie. The football team went 2-9 overall in Wesson’s lone season.
Bertie’s new football coach is Ronald Pou, who is from Williamston. Pou won a state championship as a player. He has seven years of coaching experience, some of which were at J.H. Rose High School in Greenville. Last year, he was the defensive coordinator for Martin County during its run to the playoffs. Pou is going to be in his second year as an English teacher at Bertie.
The Falcons chose to not bring back Johnnie Rascoe Jr. despite the coach leading Bertie’s boys basketball team to 26-5 overall record in consecutive seasons. Rascoe’s first year resulted in a 9-15 record, so his overall record over his three seasons was 61-20.
The new head basketball coach is Dee Frazier, who has 8 years of college coaching experience at the NCAA DI, DII, NAIA & USCAA levels. He was a head coach at Clinton College (SC) during the 2021-22 season. He has guided over 25 student-athletes to athletic honors (all-conference & all-American).
Frazier will also serve as the new athletic director at Bertie. The previous athletic director was Christopher Jordan.
Jordan was also the head girls basketball coach. The girls basketball team finished 10-14 overall last season. According to MaxPreps, they finished 23-5 over Jordan two years ago.
Jair Cooley will be the new girls basketball coach. He has four years of coaching experience in basketball and football. He will be teaching Entrepreneurship at Bertie.
