Athenry Oranmore local election results full list as recount issued

We’re still a long way off from knowing the shape of Athenry Oranmore’s full results just yet but we do have two candidates who were elected on first count overnight. Poll topper Fianna Fail’s Albert Dolan, the youngest member of Galway County Council, and Independent Thomas Grealish stormed through the quota after midnight to much joyous scenes in the count centre. Quota in Athenry-Oranmore was 1,718. David Collins and James Charity joined them after five and six counts. Peter Feeney made it five after nine counts. Dolan, Grealish, Collins, Charity, Feeney are joined by Louis O Hara, and Cillian Keane together who arrived after ten counts.

However, Eoghan Gallagher of Fine Gael called a recount just as the seven seemed confirmed.

There was also a major upset as outgoing councillor Shelley Hereterich Quinn has been eliminated as the candidate with the lowest number of votes in the eighth count. The ninth count saw Peter Feeney elected. The tenth saw Louis O Hara and Cillian Keane complete the line-up.

Valid Poll was 13,742. A second count was had just after 1am but it saw nobody elected as the busy bees at the count centre locked the doors and called it a night. A third count saw nobody elected and Maria Carr was eliminated. David Collins made it on the fifth count in Athenry. A sixth count saw James Charity returned, passing the quota and was deemed elected. No candidates met the quota on the seventh count – and James Charity’s surplus was sent back to count. No-one reached the quota on the eighth count.

Here’s how things are looking as we head into day two of the count, after three counts: FG David Collins +22 – 1,705; Ind James Charity + 26 – 1,614; FG Peter Feeney + 4 – 1,342; FG Eoghan Gallagher + 27 – 1,105; SF Louis O’Hara + 7 – 1,080; FF Cillian Keane + 20 – 1,025; FF Shelly Herterich Quinn + 6 – 962; GP Eoin Madden + 2 – 477; LAB Fergal Landy + 3 – 418; Sean Hehir + 5 – 342; Maria Carr + 3 – 236.

Athenry-Oranmore is one of seven Local Electoral Areas, with a total of 39 seats up for grabs. Athenry-Oranmore is joined by Ballinasloe, Connemara North, Connemara South, Gort-Kinvara, Loughrea, and, Tuam. 20 seats for one party or coalition of parties is enough for control of the council.

Thirteen candidates were on the ballot. Sitting councillors Cllr James Charity (Independent), Cllr. Shelly Herterich Quinn (Fianna Fáil), Cllr. David Collins (Fine Gael), and Cllr. Albert Dolan (Fianna Fáil) sought re-election, while Cllr. Jim Cuddy and Cllr. Gabe Cronnelly did not seek re-election.

They were joined on the ballot by Sean Hehir (Independent Ireland), Maria Carr (The Irish People), Aidan Corrigan (Irish Freedom), Peter Feeney (Fine Gael), Tomás Grealish (Independent), Eoghan Gallagher (Fine Gael) Cillian Keane (Fianna Fáil), Eoin Madden (Green), and Louis O’Hara (Sinn Féin).

126 candidates ran campaigns in ten LEAs – 81 candidates stood for the 39 seats of the Galway County Council’s seven LEAs, while 45 candidates ran for the 18 seats of Galway City Council’s three LEAs.

Average turnout for Galway county and city was just under 50% at 47 percent with Moycullen the best at turning out with 61%.

Second was Spiddal at 54% followed by Kinvara at 53% and Athenry and Salthill at 52%. The rest were: Tuam 50%, Knocknacarra 48%, Bushypark 48%, Ballybane 47% Oranmore 47%, Gort 47%, Clifden 46%, Claregalway 46%, Loughrea 45%, Westside 45%, Ballinasloe 45% and Renmore 43%.

More than 2,100 people ran in the local elections.
