Recount called for Athenry/Oranmore – Connacht Tribune – Galway City Tribune

A recount has been called after the final seats were declared filled in the Athenry/Oranmore contest.

There were just 19 votes between two newcomers, Fine Gael’s Eoghan Gallagher and Fianna Fáil’s Cillian Keane, after returning officer Michael Owens announced that Louis O’Hara and Cillian Keane were elected even though they didn’t reach the quota.

Sinn Féin’s O’Hara got the sixth seat in the constituency, having narrowly missed out on securing a seat in the last general election. He’s the first Sinn Féin candidate to win a seat so far in Galway.

Cillian Keane was declared the winner on 1,482 votes, marginally ahead of Eoghan Gallagher.

Cllr Albert Dolan, Tomás Grealish, Cllr David Collins, Cllr James Charity and Peter Feeney have already been elected.
