Social media flooded as car enters Shannon in Limerick

AN UNFORTUNATE driver had a sinking feeling as he managed to launch his car, instead of a boat, into the river in Limerick city on Wednesday evening.

It is understood the man was launching a boat at St Michaels Rowing Club’s slipway, O’Callaghan Strand when the incident occurred.

However, it is believed he may have forgotten to put the handbrake on and could do nothing as he watched his Volkswagen Passat slowly slip into the river and sink down to the bottom.

Limerick Fire and Rescue Service, Limerick Marine Search and Rescue and a tow truck operator all attended the scene. Divers had to attach the stricken vehicle so that it could be winched onto the lorry.

Crowds gathered to see the drama with photos and videos being widely shared on social media platforms including TikTok and WhatsApp.

There was understandably concern when people saw what was happening and were wondering if a person or persons were trapped inside.

But those who had seen it all unfold were able to inform them that the car was unoccupied and thankfully there were no casualties.
