Ireland European elections results – Full list of 14 MEPs elected

Millions of people across Ireland went to the polls to vote in the 2024 European Parliament Elections.

Votes were cast on Friday, June 7 as households chose which 14 people would represent the country on the European stage. Ireland is split into three constituencies – Dublin, Midlands-North-West and Ireland South.

In total, 73 candidates ran in the elections, but only 14 MEPs could be chosen to represent Ireland at the European Parliament.

Candidates sought a five-year term to represent Ireland in the parliaments in Brussels and Strasbourg. Some 70% of the law transposed in Ireland comes from the European Union.

See the 14 MEPs who were elected below. Please note this article is being updated as seats are confirmed.

Dublin (4 seats)

The only constituency with one single county, voters in the capital elected four MEPs.

• Barry Andrews (Fianna Fail); 16.5% 1st pref

• Regina Doherty (Fine Gael); 16.28% 1st pref

• Lynn Boylan (Sinn Fein); 9.41% 1st pref

• Aodhan O Riordain (Labour); 8.16% 1st pref

Following a number of tense counts, sitting MEPs Clare Daly of Independents 4 Change and the Green Party’s Ciaran Cuffe ended up losing their seats. Independent Ireland’s Niall Boylan missed out marginally after Mr Cuffe’s transfers benefited Mr Riordain. Dublin was the first constituency to have all of its seats filled.

Ireland South (5 seats)

Ireland South is made up of all six counties in Munster and four in Leinster – Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Clare, Waterford, Tipperary, Carlow, Kilkenny, Wicklow and Wexford. Some 23 candidates were running for five seats.

• Sean Kelly (Fine Gael); 17.83% 1st pref
• Billy Kelleher (Fianna Fáil); 13.2% 1st pref

• Michael McNamara; (Independent); 8.2% 1st pref

• Cynthia Ní Mhurchú; (Fianna Fáil); 8.0% 1st pref

• Kathleen Funchion; (Sinn Fein); 7.3% 1st pref

Fine Gael’s Sean Kelly was the only one elected following his success on Monday night. Mr Kelly won 122,777 votes in the Ireland South constituency, surpassing the quota of 114,761.

“This very moment has to be the high point, because you work so hard,” the Kerry man said. “You’re never sure how it’s going to go because every day you go out and meet people who are positive, but you also meet very negative, some very nasty people and you say to yourself ‘Oh my god, will I get any votes?’

“And then you come here and you get a huge vote, elected on the first count, it makes everything worthwhile, so this is the highlight, it has to be for everybody.”

Following 18 counts at Nemo Rangers, Fianna Fáil’s Billy Kelleher won his European seat back on Thursday afternoon.

Sitting Green Party MEP Grace O’Sullivan lost her seat on Thursday evening, stating that it had been the “honour of her life” to serve as an MEP.

Midlands-North-West (5 seats)

The biggest of all of the constituencies, Midlands-North-West had the highest number of candidates running – 27 vying for five seats. The constituency comprises 15 counties across Connacht, Leinster and Ulster. This includes Cavan, Donegal, Galway, Kildare, Laois, Leitrim, Longford, Louth, Mayo, Meath, Monaghan, Offaly, Roscommon, Sligo and Westmeath.

Counting is continuing at TF Royal Theatre in Castlebar, Co Mayo, with all five seats still up for grabs. Independent Luke ‘Ming’ Flanagan was leading the way as of Thursday morning, followed by Nina Carberry (Fine Gael), Barry Cowen (Fianna Fail), Maria Walsh (Fine Gael) and Ciaran Mulloly (Independent Ireland).
