Broward boys tennis player of the year: Max Freedman, North Broward Prep freshman

There were no expectations for North Broward Prep freshman Max Freedman as he started his tennis season playing number one singles for the Eagles.

“I just went into the year trying to meet new people and have a good experience with high school tennis,” said Freedman, who captured the Class 2A overall boys singles state title with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Jacksonville Bolles’ Dhruv Pandya at the FHSAA state tournament at Lake Sylvan Park in Seminole County.

“It was definitely a little intimidating going against seniors and juniors, but it was also a lot of fun getting that opportunity,” Freedman added. He said as the year went on he gained more confidence and believed he had a chance to win gold. “I believed I could go all of the way.”

Freedman, who compiled a 17-3 mark in singles and 8-4 in doubles, made history as he became the first tennis player from his school to with the state individual singles championship. He said one of the best parts about winning the state tournament was being able to represent his school and his coach Jaro Pivarci.

“He was incredible throughout the entire experience,” Freedman said. “I don’t think I could have done it without him. I think my mental game got better. I have been working at it a ton…it has helped me stay calm out there and not react to things when they don’t go my way.”

Pivarci, the tennis coach at North Broward Prep, said Freedman led by example.

“Max was a great motivator and example for younger players throughout the whole season,” Pivarci said. “He’s a fighter and is always positive on the court. He’s a team player and also enjoyed playing doubles with different players.

“I think it’s very difficult to win singles at states as a freshman because you compete against players who are a few years older,” Pivarci added. “Also, Florida has a very high level of junior tennis. Overall, it was a great experience for him.”
