Travel writer and broadcaster Melanie May (melaniemay.com) always travels with a backpack, even when she isn’t exploring. Weight distribution is all important, she says. “Pack light items first, place heavier items in the middle and then more lighter items at the top so it’s evenly distributed on your back and not too bulky. I pack at a height, keeping the overall width quite thin. That way my backpack fits on shelves in buses. I don’t have to put it underneath the bus, where there is a bigger risk of it being stolen.”
