Man dies after being shot near basketball courts at N.J. park, authorities say

A man died in the hospital on Thursday night after he was shot near the basketball courts of a Newark park, officials said.

Raymeer Shakim Tarver, 25, of Newark, was shot shortly after 9 p.m., the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office said in a news release. The shooting happened in Boys Park, at the intersection of Sussex Avenue and Duryea Street in the University Heights neighborhood of the city.

Tarver was pronounced dead at University Hospital at 9:42 p.m., authorities said.

Officials said they have not identified a suspect.

The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office is asking anyone with information about the shooting to call its tip line at 877-847-7432.
