Watch: Paul Kimmage and Brian Keogh review Day 2 at the US Open
The second day at the US Open was a tough day all round as the world’s best golfers battled the difficult Pinehurst course in North Carolina, and soaring temperatures.
A 72 for Rory McIlroy on the par 70 layout was good enough to keep him firmly in contention, just two shots behind the leader, Ludvig Aberg of Sweden. The world’s number 3 is nicely positioned, as 26 of the last 28
US Open winners have been three shots or less off the lead at the end of the second round.
And Tom McKibbin holed a superb 16 foot putt for birdie on the 18th to just make the cut on his first US Open appearance.
His veteran caddie, David McNeilly, celebrated by raising both fists to the sky as the 21-year-old added a 71 to his opening 74 to make it on five-over alongside the likes of world number one Scottie Scheffler and major champions Shane Lowry, Brooks Koepka, Matthew Fitzpatrick and Francesco Molinari, who aced the ninth to survive.
