Wexford strawberry growers delighted to get vote of confidence from the public
Wexford growers are thrilled that strawberries have been named as the nation’s favourite fruit by Bord Bia.
Martin Murphy from Boro Valley Fruit Farm in Enniscorthy is just one of the businesses growing and producing strawberries for the nation to enjoy. The family farm employs 8-10 people throughout the year, with additional staff coming on board during the height of the growing season. The business was initially founded by Martin’s father who is still actively involved in the day-to-day operations along with Martin’s mother and sister.
The business proudly specialises in producing and supplying Bord Bia quality-assured strawberries for some of Ireland’s leading supermarkets and stores.
This decision is based on the berries topping the value of the Irish fruit market in 2023 with a percentage of 15.3 per cent. They were closely followed by dessert apples with 14.8 per cent and grapes with 12.2 per cent.
‘Celebrate Strawberry Season,’ is organised by the Irish Soft Fruit Growers Association, in partnership with Bord Bia and the IFA, to encourage people to enjoy more strawberries throughout the whole Irish season (May to October). The celebration is supported by a public information campaign which offers innovative ways of including strawberries at all meal times throughout the day.
Bord Bia advise that the best way to store strawberries for longer freshness is to store them in the fridge, do not remove the stalks until ready to use and to wash them in water before serving. For more inspiration and recipes, check out the Bord Bia website or social media accounts.
