Hyderabad: Experts have noted a recent shift in stomach cancer trends from lower to upper gastric cancers. “We’re seeing more upper gastric cancers now, largely due to obesity and H. pylori infections,” said Dr Mukta Srinivasulu, director of MNJ Institute of Research and Regional Cancer Centre. The institute handles 700-800 cases annually.Furthermore, there is a significant correlation between high salt intake and stomach cancer. Dr Mukta said, “High salt consumption has long been linked to cancer in regions like Japan and Finland, where salted fish and pickles are popular.”H pylori infection, linked to high salt intake, is hypothesized to increase gastric cancer risk. Dr Nageshwar Reddy, chief of gastroenterology at AIG explains, “Salt may damage the stomach lining, causing inflammation and atrophic gastritis, and it can promote H pylori growth.”Recent research published in ‘Frontiers in Nutrition’ highlights a 25% increased risk of gastric cancer with high salt intake. Dr Chinnababu Sunkavalli, clinical director of robotic surgical oncology at Yashoda hospitals notes, “Although establishing a direct link is challenging, regions like Guntur and parts of AP, known for high salt diets, show elevated stomach cancer rates.”
