Thompson stuns Rune to make second round

Australian Jordan Thompson moved into the second round of the Queen’s by defeating Dane Holger Rune, the No 7 seed, 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-3 at Queen’s Club in London.

In what was arguably the shock of the day in West London, last year’s Wimbledon quarter-finalist and seventh seed Rune saw a one-set lead slip through his grasp as Thompson progressed.

Rune looked in control after taking the first set on a surface he is comfortable with. But it was the Australian who proved his mettle, clinching a second-set tiebreak before sprinting into a 4-1 lead in the decider.

From there, both players held serve as Rune could not get foothold into his opponent’s service games and the Australian served out an impressive win.

Thompson, ranked No 43, will play the winner of the match between wildcard Andy Murray and Australian qualifier Alexei Popyrin next.
